How Does Acupuncture Work? Acupuncture is based on the ancient Eastern concept of yin and yang as it relates to the human body. In addition to the nerves and blood vessels, our body has a system of vessels that carry a very subtle energy, the Qi energy. The vessels are called the meridians, and the Qi energy is actually life force energy or bio-electric energy, which is carried to all parts of the body.

Illness and disease often result when Qi energy is blocked and imbalances are created in the flow of energy through the meridians. Acupuncture releases the blockages.

Acupuncture manipulates this Qi energy by inserting needles into acupuncture points. These points are located where the Qi of the meridians comes to the body’s surface and can be accessed and manipulated. Treating these points can resolve obstructions and accumulations, which manifest as pain or illness. Acupuncture can stimulate the Qi flow, which will bring energy and circulation to a weak body part and redirect Qi that does not flow to where it is intended. The results can be subtle or dramatic. The response varies from patient to patient depending on their overall health and constitution. For example, it's clinically demonstrated that patients with high blood pressure have their pressure lowered with acupuncture, and patients with low blood pressure have their pressure raised with acupuncture. The point is to balance Qi for optimum health and wellbeing.

Determining The Treatment Protocol With acupuncture, the number of treatments necessary to improve a patient's health, energy and feeling of well-being varies from person to person and according to different types of diseases and illnesses, and the state of the patient's overall health and energy. In general, the treatment protocol is determined by the patient's state of health. The acupuncturist interviews the patient, and performs a traditional pulse and tongue diagnosis. Generally speaking, patients should expect to receive 5-10 treatments to allow the protocol to take effect. Some patients feel immediate improvement with the first treatment. With serious illnesses or chronic cases, the patient might need to receive acupuncture every day for a several days. Acupuncture treatments are cumulative. The patients will need less frequent treatments as their health improves. Many patients experience improvement with treatments once a week. After health has been optimized, a monthly "tune-up" treatment would be advisable. Even when patients feel relatively healthy, everyone is encouraged to come at least once a quarter as the seasons change to improve their overall energy level and strengthen the immune system. The Role Of Herbs Ancient Chinese doctors discovered that many herbs and plants have healing properties, with each herb being beneficial for certain types of illnesses and disorders. Chinese herbal formulas have a powerful effect on improving mood, energy and well being. Beatrice is a licensed herbalist as well as acupuncturist, and she uses both tools to promote health. Chinese herbs are categorized by their energetic properties and affinity to organ systems, which allows herbalist to customize and fine tune herbal prescriptions for each patient. Herbs are a key component to promoting health.
